importance-of-reading-for-children

WHY IS READING SO IMPORTANT?

Every child is born with a remarkable set of inborn intelligences — what we call the four COGIF Intelligences. These are not taught in schools, but innate capacities that humans developed over evolution, that helped us survive dinosaurs and calamities alike and emerge as a dominant race. Reading for pleasure activates these.

1. Commonsense Intelligence : Reading exposes children to cause and effect, to consequence and context. It trains the mind to recognize patterns, draw logical inferences, and apply practical wisdom to real-world situations.

2. Gut Intelligence : Stories immerse children in rich, complex situations that require intuitive judgement. As children read, they activate their internal compass — the ability to sense what feels right or wrong even before they can fully articulate why.

3. Imagination Intelligence : Every great innovation, every solution to a complex challenge, begins with an act of imagination. Reading for pleasure is the single greatest gymnasium for the imaginative mind. It builds the capacity to envision what does not yet exist. Reading strengthens the brains capacity for creativity and invention.

4. Feelings Intelligence :  Reading stories builds empathy — the ability to understand, feel, and respond to the inner world of others. Children who read widely develop a sophisticated emotional literacy that enables them to navigate relationships, manage conflict with grace, and lead with genuine compassion.
